13 inning heartbreaker brings Blue Hawks' season to an end

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — Dickinson State pushed No. 11 Our Lady of the Lake to 13 innings Wednesday afternoon, but the Blue Hawks' season ended with a 9-8 loss in an elimination game at the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round Klamath Falls Bracket at Stilwell Stadium.

The Blue Hawks finished the season 42-14 after recording 11 hits and overcoming an early five-run deficit. Our Lady of the Lake improved to 41-11.

Dickinson State trailed 5-0 after five innings before scoring three runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to take its first lead. The Blue Hawks then went ahead again in the eighth, but the Saints answered in the bottom half and won the game on Lilly Rocha's solo home run to lead off the bottom of the 13th.

Kiley Hubby and Viennah Meyer both homered for Dickinson State. Hubby drove in three runs, while Meyer went 2-for-3 with three walks, two runs scored and one RBI. Stocktyn Stevenson finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs, and Celina Wilharm added two hits, two runs and one RBI.

Our Lady of the Lake took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Arianna Alejandro scored on a passed ball. The Saints extended the lead to 3-0 in the third on Rocha's two-run home run, then added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Dickinson State started its comeback in the sixth. Wilharm singled with two outs and Brooke Lijewski walked before Hubby hit a three-run home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

The Blue Hawks continued the rally in the seventh. Meyer walked, Allyson Farrington walked and Izzy Kelly moved both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Ashlee Potter walked to load the bases, and Stevenson followed with a two-run single up the middle to tie the game at 5.

Wilharm then singled up the middle to score Potter and give Dickinson State a 6-5 lead. Lijewski followed with an RBI single that brought in Wilharm and made it 7-5.

Our Lady of the Lake tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on Yezenia Perez's two-run home run.

Dickinson State answered again in the eighth when Meyer hit a solo home run to left center, putting the Blue Hawks back in front 8-7. The Saints tied it in the bottom half on Alyssa Guzman's solo home run.

Both teams had chances in extra innings. Dickinson State put two runners in scoring position in the 10th after Octavia Meyer and Viennah Meyer singled and advanced on a lineout, but the Blue Hawks were unable to bring the go-ahead run home. Our Lady of the Lake put two runners in scoring position in the 11th, but Ava Jahner worked out of the inning with a groundout.

Dickinson State had another opportunity in the 13th when Potter reached on a throwing error and moved to second on Stevenson's sacrifice bunt. The Saints retired the next two batters to keep the game tied.

Rocha ended the game in the bottom of the 13th with her third hit of the day and second home run.

Hope Fath started in the circle for Dickinson State and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits in 2 1/3 innings. Reannan Butler worked 2 2/3 innings and allowed two runs, one earned, while striking out four. Reagan King threw 2 1/3 innings before Jahner entered in the eighth and worked the final 4 2/3 innings.

Jahner took the loss, allowing one run on four hits with one strikeout.

Annika Litterio earned the win for Our Lady of the Lake. She threw 10 innings, allowing six runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and seven walks. Valeria Vielma worked three innings in relief.

Rocha led the Saints at the plate, going 2-for-6 with three RBIs and two home runs. Reanna Aguirre and Caitlin Casas each had three hits, while Perez drove in two runs.

Dickinson State closed its season after winning the Frontier Conference regular-season and tournament championships and advancing through the NAIA Opening Round with wins over Arizona Christian on Monday and Tuesday.
