HELENA, Mont. – Carroll (Mont.) College junior TJ Fierling has been named the recipient of the Frontier Conference Grit Award for Men's Golf. Sponsored by the Montana Army National Guard, this honor recognizes student-athletes who demonstrate extraordinary perseverance, mental toughness, and integrity.
The Grit Award celebrates individuals who embody the Montana Army National Guard’s core values of resilience, service, discipline, and teamwork. It is awarded to athletes who rise above adversity, show consistent determination in the pursuit of excellence, and inspire others through their leadership.
Fierling, a business major from North Bend, Wash., is recognized as one of the hardest-working student-athletes on the Fighting Saints golf team. In addition to his leadership on the course, he recently recorded the first-ever hole-in-one during tournament play in Carroll College history.
The award highlights Fierling’s exceptional commitment to selfless service and community impact:
- Leadership and Representation: He serves as the Student-Athlete Advisory Council representative for the golf team and is a volunteer for Carroll College’s new student orientation.
- Community Engagement: Fierling frequently assists with youth golf camps and program fundraisers.
- Selfless Service: While volunteering as a parking attendant in freezing temperatures for a hospital Gala in Helena, Fierling chose to stay after his shift ended to serve as a bid spotter for the event’s live auction.
"TJ is very selfless, and full of integrity and loyalty," stated Bennett MacIntyre, head men’s golf coach at Carroll. He also emphasized Fierling’s ability to lead by example and put others first.
By maintaining a high standard in the classroom and on the course, Fierling exemplifies the grit and personal courage celebrated by the Montana Army National Guard.
