HELENA, Mont. – The SWX Local Sports live broadcast returns Saturday evening at PE Center as Carroll (Mont.) hosts MSU-Northern in the Frontier Conference basketball doubleheader.
The women’s game kicks off at 5 p.m. (Mountain Time), with the men’s game to follow at 7 p.m. (Mountain Time) in Helena.
There are four games remaining on the Frontier Conference schedule, including this Friday’s contests. Next weekend are the final regular-season contests before the post-season tournament at Butte Civic Center in Butte, Mont., on Feb. 27 through March 2.
Women’s
Carroll (Mont.) returned inside the NAIA’s Top 25 national poll for the first time since December, earning a No. 25 ranking in the current edition of the national poll with an overall record of 16-8. The Fighting Saints were on an eight-game winning streak before Montana Western snapped their winning streak on CC’s home court on Jan. 31.
Carroll went 1-1 record in last weekend’s contests on the road, holding off Bellevue (Neb.) 63-56 on Feb. 6 and falling to current Frontier Conference’s leader current No. 6 ranked Dakota State (S.D.) 70-34 on Feb. 7. CC is 8-2 record in the last ten games. The Saints host Providence (Mont.) Friday evening.
MSU-Northern, who received votes recognition for the fifth consecutive national poll, is 16-7 overall record. The Skylights’ four-game winning streak came to an end on Feb. 7 as they fell to Valley City State (N.D.) at home by the score of 78-74.
MSU-N visits No. 23 Rocky Mountain (Mont.) Friday evening in Billings before traveling to Helena on Saturday.
Carroll is tied for second in the Frontier Conference standings with 14-4 record (with Montana Tech). MSU-Northern is fifth in the standings with 12-6 league record, one game behind fourth place by Rocky Mountain (Mont.) with 13-5 conference record.
The Saints had won the last 20 meetings with the Skylights. Carroll edged MSU-Northern in the first Frontier Conference meeting earlier this season on Jan. 16 in Havre, Mont. The Saints rallied back from an 18-13 first quarter deficit and defeated the Skylights 68-63.
The last MSU-N’s victory over CC was on Jan. 22, 2020, in Havre. The Saints had won the last 14 home meetings with Skylights since Feb. 3, 2018. The last time MSU-Northern defeated Carroll in Helena was on Feb. 18, 2017.
Men’s
Carroll enters this weekend’s Frontier Conference play at home with an overall record of 16-7 and 14-4 record in the league. The Saints are tied for second in the conference with Bellevue (Neb.), two games behind first-place No. 11 ranked Rocky Mountain (Mont.) with 16-2 conference record.
The Saints coming off from an 83-76 come from behind victory at Dakota State (S.D.) on Feb. 7. CC earned a weekend split on the road last weekend, despite falling to Bellevue 82-75 on Feb. 6. Carroll has won three times in the last four games and will host Providence Friday evening.
MSU-Northern received votes recognition in the latest NAIA Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 national poll earlier this week. The Lights are currently on a five-game winning streak before Friday’s contest against Frontier Conference’s leader Rocky Mountain, holding an overall record of 16-8.
MSU-N is in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Frontier Conference standings with 11-7 record (with Dakota State and Montana Western). The Lights are coming off from a pair of home wins over Mayville State (N.D.) 82-61 on Feb. 6 and Valley City State (N.D.) 91-58 on Feb. 7.
MSU-Northern snapped their seven-game losing skid in the series meeting with Carroll on Jan. 16, jumping to a 46-30 halftime lead and winning by the score of 89-73 in Havre.
Carroll is 18-2 record in last 20 home games with MSU-Northern. The Saints are also 31-9 record in the last 40 meetings with the Lights.
