Northwestern (Iowa) ends BU’s season in national quarterfinals

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — No. 7 Bellevue University saw its season end Saturday afternoon with a 27-25, 25-19, 25-18 loss to No. 2 Northwestern (Iowa) College in the NAIA National Championship quarterfinals at the Tyson Events Center. The Bruins finished the year 29-5 overall, while the Red Raiders improved to 32-3, extended their winning streak to 21 matches, and advanced to Monday's national semifinal.

Serving and first-contact play told a significant part of the story. Northwestern finished with 12 service aces against just three errors and kept Bellevue under pressure in serve receive throughout the match. The Bruins totaled six aces and five service errors, but were charged with 12 reception errors and sided out at a 42.7 percent rate, as NWC frequently scored in clusters from the service line.

Bellevue was led by Eve Fountain, who recorded 10 kills on .143 hitting to go with eight digs and one ace. Kealy Kiviniemi added eight kills on a .263 attack percentage, three block assists, and three digs, while Bentlee Kollbaum finished with seven kills and five digs. Savanna Berger chipped in five kills and two block assists, and Chloe Cloud added two kills and three digs. Setters Mila Aiwohi, Jada Nunn, and Victoria Runyan combined for 34 assists, with Aiwohi handing out 17 assists and an ace and Runyan contributing five assists and two aces.

Northwestern countered with a balanced attack and sustained pressure from the back line. Stella Winterfeld led all players with 15 kills and 10 digs, while Sidney Oostra and Zavyr Metzger added six kills apiece, with Oostra also serving four aces. Rylie Franken chipped in six kills on .364 hitting, and setter duo Nyah Potthoff and Liv Reitsma combined for 34 assists and seven aces, with Potthoff finishing with five aces, 18 assists, and 15 digs.

How It Happened

Set 1 — Northwestern 27, Bellevue 25

Bellevue University held several early advantages in a tightly played opener. The Bruins moved ahead 5-3 after a block by Kiviniemi and Berger and a Kollbaum kill, then later tied the set at 15-15 on a Fountain kill and a Metzger attack error. Northwestern answered with a 5-2 stretch, using kills from Emma Westphal and Winterfeld to build a 20-17 lead.

BU responded with its best run of the set, scoring five of the next six points. A Berger kill and a Fountain termination from the back row helped the Bruins surge in front 22-20, and another Fountain kill made it 24-22 to give Bellevue two set points. Northwestern, however, closed with a 5-1 rally. Winterfeld cut the margin to 24-23 with a kill, Maggie Bloom followed with a service ace to tie it at 24-24, and after BU briefly went back in front 25-24, the Red Raiders finished on kills from Winterfeld around a Potthoff ace for the 27-25 win.

Set 2 — Northwestern 25, Bellevue 19

Northwestern's serve took control early in the second set. Oostra opened with three consecutive aces for a 3-0 lead, and the Red Raiders pushed the margin to 7-2 as Franken and Winterfeld scored in transition. Bellevue answered with a 5-1 run, highlighted by kills from Kiviniemi, Kollbaum and Cloud, to pull within 7-6.

NWC rebuilt a cushion behind Winterfeld and its block, moving ahead 15-10 on a Metzger kill and a Bellevue attack error. BU trimmed the deficit to 18-15 after a Fountain kill and a Kamryn Scheib service ace, but Northwestern closed out the set by siding out consistently and adding one more ace from Reitsma. A late Winterfeld kill set up set point, and Reitsma's serve clipped the tape and fell in for a 25-19 decision and a 2-0 match lead.

Set 3 — Northwestern 25, Bellevue 18

Northwestern carried the momentum into the third set, racing out to a 6-1 lead on kills from Winterfeld, Franken and Aubrey De Groot, along with a pair of Bellevue attack errors. After a BU timeout, the Bruins briefly steadied behind a Kiviniemi kill and a Payton Dzingle termination, closing to 7-4 and later 10-7 on a series of Red Raider errors.

NWC answered with one more decisive stretch. A Winterfeld kill and a Kollbaum error sparked a 6-1 run that pushed the lead to 16-10, and Potthoff later added back-to-back aces to extend the margin to 21-13. Bellevue drew within 24-18 on a block by Dzingle and a Kiviniemi kill, but Westphal ended the Bruins' season with a kill on match point to complete the 25-18 set and the sweep.

Inside The Numbers

Northwestern's serve-pass edge was the defining statistical theme. The Red Raiders recorded 12 aces with just three service errors, while Bellevue totaled six aces and five errors and was charged with 12 reception errors. Those swings in first contact contributed to NWC's 53.1 percent sideout rate compared to 42.7 percent for the Bruins and helped the Red Raiders outscore BU 62-46 in total points despite a relatively modest advantage in kills.

Offensively, Northwestern hit .223 with 42 kills and 17 attack errors, while Bellevue finished at .147 with 35 kills and 18 errors. NWC was most efficient in the second set, hitting .321 (12 kills, 3 errors) and limiting BU to .028 hitting in the third frame. Northwestern also held an 8.0-5.0 edge in team blocks, with Metzger involved in seven of those stuffs.

Milestone Watch

Fountain added to her program records in her final match, closing her Bellevue University career with 1,916 kills after her 10-kill performance against Northwestern. She also finished with 1,918 digs and 161 service aces, remaining sixth on both career lists while holding the top spot in kills.

Aiwohi's 17 assists brought her career total to 2,351, keeping her in ninth place on BU's all-time assists chart as she continues to chase Kathy Kent's 2,439 for eighth. Kiviniemi closed her collegiate career with 1,190 kills, finishing 16th on Bellevue's all-time list and ending just seven kills shy of Alicia Oakeson (1,197; 2004–07) and within reach of Kia Jarvis (1,221; 1996–97).
