HELENA, Mont. — Top-seeded and No. 2-ranked Providence (Mont.) powered its way into the Frontier Conference semifinals Thursday afternoon, sweeping No. 8 seed Montana Western 25-19, 25-19, 25-19 in the opening quarterfinal at the Carroll College PE Center.
The Argos (29-2 overall record) showcased the balance and firepower that carried them to the league’s best record, hitting .288 as a team and finishing with 50 kills behind a dynamic setting performance from
Bella Thompson, who handed out
41 assists and added 10 digs.
Montana Western (13-17 overall record) hung tough early in every set but could not match the Argos’ offensive consistency. The Bulldogs totaled 37 kills while hitting .156, led by
Kennedy Lingenfelter (10 kills, .280),
Olivia Rosborough (7 kills, .353), and
Dani Brown (6 kills). Lingenfelter also added a team-high
3.0 blocks, part of six team blocks on the day.
Set 1 — Providence pulls away late (25–19)
Montana Western opened fast, jumping ahead 5–1 after kills from Rosborough and Morgyn Harrison, plus a service ace by Megan Hardman. Providence steadied quickly, sparked by
Sadie Giles,
Bella Green, and
Martyna Fiedler, who combined for 11 kills in the frame.
A 6–1 Argo run flipped a 12–12 tie into an 18–13 lead. Providence closed it out on Green’s fourth kill of the set. The Argos hit .349 while holding UMW to .190.
Set 2 — Argos win a back-and-forth battle (25–19)
The second set featured eight ties and long rallies, with both sides trading momentum swings. UMW led 12–11 midway through the frame after blocks by Brown and Rosborough and another Lingenfelter kill.
But Providence’s middle-attack efficiency took over—
Fiedler,
Taylor, and
Faupula powered a decisive 9–3 run. The Argos posted four team blocks in the set and hit .244 to take a 2–0 match lead.
Set 3 — Providence finishes strong (25–19)
UMW again came out sharp, building a 9–5 lead behind Rosborough, Duncan, and Lingenfelter. Providence answered with poise: Fiedler and Giles each totaled four kills in the final set, and libero
Kyra Saiers steadied the floor defense with 16 digs overall.
Up 21–17, Providence scored four of the last six points, capped by a service-ace barrage from
Araleigh Arnold, who delivered two aces during the closing stretch.
