GREAT FALLS, Mont. – After narrowly avoiding an upset in the first round, No. 3 seed Rocky Mountain completed a reverse sweep of No. 2 seed Providence in the semifinals of the 2023 Frontier Conference Volleyball Tournament, presented by First Interstate Bank.
Trailing 2-0, Rocky Mountain (20-11) won the final three sets to take the match 24-26, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-12.
The Battlin’ Bears were able to find a way to win despite Providence (15-11) holding a 72-63 advantage in kills. The biggest change for Rocky was cutting down their attack errors with just nine over the final three sets after 13 in the first two.
That helped Rocky hit .275 for the match and they used 67 digs and 10 blocks to limit the Argos to .253 hitting. Rocky also finished with a 5-3 edge in service aces.
Bella Bryan led all players with 20 kills while Makenna Bushman added 14 on .429 hitting. Rhiannon Nez hit .478 to record 13 kills and she posted seven blocks.
Blythe Sealey tallied 55 assists and three aces. Brooke Ark finished with 19 digs.
Providence recorded at least 15 kills in each of the first four sets and took that 2-0 lead by hitting .387 with 15 kills in the second set.
Jenna Thorne led four Argos in double figures with 18 kills and Zoe Naugle had 16. Taylor Christensen finished with a match-high 23 digs.
Rocky will face No. 4 seed Montana Western in Saturday’s Championship Match. First serve from the McLaughlin Center Gymnasium is at 2 p.m.
