PHOENIX, Ariz. - Rocky Mountain (Mont.) built a sizable lead through the first two rounds of the Frontier Conference men’s golf championship Tuesday at Papago Golf Club, posting a 36-hole team score of 577 to sit in front of the eight-team field. Bellevue (Neb.) is second at 600, followed by Mayville State (N.D.) at 622, Dickinson State (N.D.) at 627 and Montana Tech in fifth at 634 as the tournament heads to its final round.

The three-round event is not finished, and the conference race remains active, entering Wednesday morning. Round 3 is scheduled to tee off at 7 a.m. Mountain time at Papago Golf Club, with Rocky Mountain carrying the strongest position after rounds of 287 and 290. Individually, Rocky Mountain has controlled the top of the leaderboard as well. Kristjan Burkelca delivered the best round of the tournament so far with a 7-under 65 in Round 2, climbing from an opening 76 to a 141 total, 3 under par, to move into first place after 36 holes. Teammate Nathan Piers is next at 144, even par, after rounds of 70 and 74, and Sam Norman stands third at 145, 1 over, helped by a 3-under 69 in the opening round that was one of the low scores of the day. Bellevue’s Thomas Gatlin is fourth at 146 after carding back-to-back 73s.

Those four headline the top performers in the field through two rounds, with Burkelca’s surge in the second round serving as the defining individual moment of the day. His closing 65 gave Rocky Mountain even more cushion in the team race after the Battlin’ Bears had already taken the early lead with their 287 on Monday. Norman’s first round 69 helped establish that advantage, and Piers’ even-par 144 added another steady score near the top of the individual board. Bellevue, meanwhile, stayed in second largely on the strength of Gatlin’s consistency over both rounds.

With two rounds complete, the conference office’s leaderboard shows Rocky Mountain in command, Bellevue as the closest pursuer, and Mayville State, Dickinson State, Montana Tech, Carroll, Providence and Valley City State all still with one round left to sort out the final standings. The third round tees off at 7 a.m. MST Wednesday at Papago Golf Club.
