HELENA, Mont. – The 2024-25 Frontier Conference Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Champions of Character recipients, presented by WinWon Technologies, were announced during the conference meet held at Vigilante Stadium in Helena (hosted by Carroll) on May 4-5.

Each recipient received a Champions of Character plaque from Frontier Conference’s commissioner Dr. Scott Crawford.

The head coach from each Frontier Conference member selects the recipient that fits to the NAIA’s Champions of Character initiative program’s five cores that include integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.

Below are the recipients for the Champions of Character and the comments from each school’s head coach (name – school – year in school – hometown – major):

Josh Smalley – Carroll – Senior – Missoula, Mont. – Engineering
“Josh is a great team captain and national qualifier,” said Carroll’s head coach Harry Clark. “He volunteers in the community and puts others needs in front of his own.  He is a great example of Champions of Character individual!”

Gavin Ulland – Montana Tech – Freshman – Missoula, Mont. – Petroleum Engineering
“Gavin always has a positive attitude at practice,” noted Montana Tech’s head coach Chuck Merrifield.  “He is willing to compete in any event that is asked of him without complaints and always puts the team before himself.”

Bridger Wheeler – Montana Western – Freshman – Cheyenne, Wyo. – Ecology
“As a freshman, Bridger has been a great addition to our program at Western,” said UMW’s head coach Taylor Grove.  “He came in with a willingness to work hard and do all that he could to improve.  He has been a very coachable athlete and has seen his work pay off as he has continued to run prs through his outdoor track season and is always willing to learn from his races.

“He brings a positive attitude to practice and meets,” added Grove.  “He also is a great teammate to others on the team. With a young team he displays good leadership qualities even as a freshman. Bridger works hard academically excelling in the classroom. He does a great job balancing his academics and his athletics."

Carter Campbell – Montana State University-Northern – Freshman – Rudyard, Mont. - Biology
“Because of Carter’s competitive nature and his endless efforts of perseverance, he has continued to improve his times at each meet and has a willingness to want to improve,” said MSU-Northern’s head coach Deborah Callahan.  “True sportsmanship was noted with Carter at a recent meet in Great Falls, where he handed some water to a young lady running for Western, who just finished the 5000M race on a warm afternoon. He is a very coachable runner with a great attitude.  I look forward to seeing him grow over the next few years.”
